A diffusion cell was constructed and successfully utilized to measure the permeation of methyl paraben through thin sheets of a commercial natural rubber compound. Three mathematical transport models were presented to describe one, two, and three dimensional diffusion of a gas in rubber. Prediction profiles of the sorption of methyl paraben by a commercial natural rubber closure were calculated from the transport models utilizing the values obtained from the membrane permeation studies. Closure sorption tests were performed and the results were compared to the calculated prediction profiles.
