The majority of clinical trials have employed the on&line centrifugal techniques. Such techniques have various disincentives to the widespread use of plasma exchange. To overcome the limitations of conventional plasma exchange, membrane processes were chosen. Operation of membrane systems is based upon hydraulic pressure gradients and required only minimal equipment. By appropriate use of membranes of varying porosity or permeability, on&line removal of pathological macromolecules could be achieved and the system designed for high recovery of albumin. Membrane technology appears very promising in the separation and treatment of plasma On&line. Chronic treatment therapies appear safe and well tolerated by the patients. The techniques place only minimal or no requirements on plasma products and should prove to be cost effective.
