Cogswell YR 1983 UL http://journal.pda.org/content/37/1/6.abstract AB A rapid method of quantitatively determining the ethylene oxide content of the sterilizing gas mixture of 12 wt% ethylene oxide, 88 wt% dichlorodifluoromethane (“12/88”) By infrared(IR)spectroscopy has been developed. The liquified sterilizing gas is sampled as a liquid, vaporized, and collected as a gas. The gas is then brought to a set, constant temperature and pressure and its absorbance read at the maximum near 1291 cm–’.The percent ethylene oxide is then determined using a standard curve. This method requires approximately one-fifth of the time required for the wet chemical method. It also has an advantage over the gas chromatographic method, in that analyst and instrument time is greatly reduced.
