A1 Korin, Amos A1 Hauk, Dale A1 Chrai, Suggy YR 1981 UL http://journal.pda.org/content/35/5/231.abstract AB Filtration of test solutions through a 0.2 μm-rated pore size pleated membrane filter cartridge, designed for operation in a tangential (crossflow) mode, shows that throughputs with such systems are many fold greater than with comparable uni-directional (dead end) cartridge filters. Although the crossflow cartridge is more expensive than the traditional cartridge filter, cost per liter of filtrate is reduced by at least 50% because of the improvement in throughput. An example of biologic processing illustrates the unusual flexibility of the crossflow system. This study compares conventional uni-directional filtration with the practice and economics of a new tangential flow (crossflow) microporous filter cartridge system. Studies with biological solutions, water, and parenteral fluids invariably showed that tangential flow filtrate throughputs were many fold greater than for unidirectional microporous filtration and that significant economic justification exists for the use of tangential flow filtration in many pharmaceutical applications.
