It is suggested that the composition of the culture medium is particularly important to the sensitivity of test systems and that certain constituents in the medium could antagonize or augment the actions of drugs. Factors which affect the suitability of cell lines for use in drug testing are considered. The growth habits of cells, their origin and genetic character all present unique problems in adapting cell cultures to the assay of a particular type of drug. Methods for establishing whether a particular cell line is exhibiting a consistent pattern of growth and metabolism is discussed.
