Noteboom YR 1983 UL http://journal.pda.org/content/37/6/226.abstract AB Some of the variables in cell culture systems that affect the growth and metabolism of animal cells are considered with respect to the development of assay systems for studying drug actions. It is suggested that the composition of the culture medium is particularly important to the sensitivity of test systems and that certain constituents in the medium could antagonize or augment the actions of drugs. Factors which affect the suitability of cell lines for use in drug testing are considered. The growth habits of cells, their origin and genetic character all present unique problems in adapting cell cultures to the assay of a particular type of drug. Methods for establishing whether a particular cell line is exhibiting a consistent pattern of growth and metabolism is discussed.
