A goal of the Center is to develop appropriate basic scientific knowledge for innovative methods to evaluate fully the safety of commercial and/or therapeutic products. An active research program is underway which will provide data on mechanisms of toxicity. Current research encompasses three areas: responses of specific cell systems, membrane structure and function, and secretory responses of cells and organs. Grant proposals are subjected to a scientific review process and must be approved by the Center Advisory Board. An annual symposium serves to shape the research approach and identify the research program. A periodic newsletter enhances communication to the scientific community and general public.
