The most important factor in microbial kill is the quantity of ozone transferred into the water, although ozone sterilization efficiency is also dependent on the type of microorganism, concentration of dissolved organics, temperature, and pH. Recent modifications in ozonator design and water/ozone contact mechanisms have made ozonation a cost competitive sterilization technique for the pharmaceutical industry particularly in the area of parenterals. Three applications that have received the most attention are terminal sterilization of aqueous drug formulations, sterilization of glass and plastic containers, and preparation of sterile process water.
