A time and energy saving method for sterilization should therefore be possible by the use of microwave heating. Spores of B. subtilis and B. Stearothermophilus were applied to the vials which were treated with microwaves for different periods of time. The reduction of microorganisms by microwave treatment was determined. The reduction factor for B. subtilis was determined to more than 1O12 within 3 min of treatment with microwaves.
