The effects of common contaminants on ion exchange resin stability and performance will be presented. The symptoms of common ion exchange fouling will be mentioned. The contaminants to be discussed will include iron, manganese, turbidity, oxidants such as free chlorine, organics, and colloidal particulates such as silica, silica complexes, and metal-organic complexes. The emphasis will be on the selection of equipment to handle each of these contaminants, the effectiveness of each type of equipment in treating a particular contaminant, and the benefits associated with proper pretreatment, in terms of ion exchange demineralization equipment performance and resin life prolongation.
