The test for relative coring tendency is generally included as part of the selection process. The strengths and weaknesses of coring test methods are reviewed and a device is presented which is designed to eliminate operator influence from the test, resulting in less subjectivity and more reproducible results. Closures with a relatively high coring tendency were used to study the influence of various machine operation factors on the coring percentage. Different operators performed the test manually to show operator-to-operator effects and to compare their results to results with the device.
