AB  - The acceptability of animal cell substrates for the manufacture of biological products, especially vaccines, has been an issue in one form or another since the development of cell cultures in the 1950s. Here the major cell substrate events of the past 50 years are briefly reviewed, and recent progress in resolving longstanding issues is highlighted.
