Abstract
Dual chamber prefilled syringes have developed to the stage where they are functionally useful for the packaging of lyophilized small volume parenteral drugs. This development is the outgrowth of a rapid proliferation of biological drugs requiring lyophilization and a need for more unit dose/unit of use packaging at the clinical level. Two styles of dual chamber syringes are currently available and are supported by recently developed manufacturing processes. This article traces the development of the dual chamber package for lyophilized SVP’s and discusses the systems that have evolved for their packaging in prefilled syringes.
