Abstract
Three series of skinless-, one of unilaterally skinned-, and one of bilaterally skinned-. Nylon membranes of 0.45- and 0.2-μM nominal pore sizes have been evaluated. Of these all but the unilaterally skinned membranes are consistent with their rated pore sizes. Fine differences are discernible between cell and pore structures and isotropy in depth of membranes prepared by wet and dry processes on the one hand, and by the thermal process on the other. Perhaps coincidentally, the three skinless membranes consist of Nylon 66 and two skinned membranes of Nylon 6. The skinless membranes exhibit appreciably narrower pore-size distributions, and somewhat higher air and water permeabilities and steeper flow vs. pressure curves than do the skinned membranes of equivalent bubble point. Within both classes of membranes, i.e., skinless and skinned, inverse relationships are found between void, volumes and burst strengths. Dry-burst strengths invariably exceed wet-burst strengths by 50–100%.
