Abstract
With the goal of increasing both productivity and accuracy, contain costs, improve the presentation of results, and transmit those results more rapidly, the Quality Control Division of Pfizer Inc. has been engaged in the automation of many laboratory operations. The particular focus has been in the chemical and microbiological assay areas, where instruments as well as computerized data handling systems are continually being upgraded. This paper describes the interface of electronic data handling systems in the laboratory to management information systems such as lot release operations and accounting systems using the concept of distributed processing networks. Communication techniques such as local area networking and data multiplexing for linking the various processing elements in the system are discussed within the framework of developing an automated multi-plant information system.
